This is quite possibly the last photo ever taken of Joseph Gearhart (1848-1928), inventor of the Gearhart Knitting Machine and founder of the Gearhart Knitting Machine Company. Of all my photos, this certainly shows him older more frail. However, as always, he has his dignified smile and is always in tune with the next adventure. In this case, it is a photo opportunity with a WWI British Sopwith Camel!
For all the modern planes of the day, Joseph sure knows how to pick a good one. In addition to his boston terrier in the bottom center of the photo, his particular aviation interest on that sunny day in the late 1920’s was credited with shooting down 1,294 enemy aircraft, more than any other Allied fighter during WWI. Here is a photo of one in mint condition.
